Homemaker Program

Since March 2023, Joyce, a senior living alone in her modest apartment, has been receiving support through the Homemaker (HM) Program provided by Catholic Charities. To protect her privacy, Joyce’s last name has been omitted — but her story is one worth sharing.

Like many older adults facing the challenges of aging, Joyce lives with limited mobility and is homebound. Her daughter, though loving and supportive, isn’t able to visit regularly due to her own frequent health issues. Without nearby family or assistance, daily tasks became increasingly difficult. Over time, Joyce experienced a few falls in her apartment, which added to her anxiety and sense of vulnerability.

That all began to change when she was enrolled in the Homemaker Program.

Through regular visits, HM staff began assisting Joyce with essential needs — running errands, light housekeeping, and meal preparation. These services brought immediate relief, but the long-term impact has been far more meaningful. With the support of her homemaker, Joyce gradually regained a sense of stability, control, and — most importantly — hope.

With her home now well cared for and the stress of daily chores eased, Joyce found herself with the energy and confidence to do something she hadn’t in a long time: invite others in. She began hosting small dinners in her apartment prepared by Roseanna, welcoming neighbors into her home for meals and conversation. Two of those neighbors are also enrolled in the Homemaker Program, creating a beautiful circle of support and friendship among them.

Roseanna, her Homemaker program coordinator has noticed a transformation in Joyce.

“She’s more social, more confident,” Roseanna shared. “The isolation that once weighed so heavily on her is lifting. Seeing her open her home and her heart to others is truly moving.”

Though Joyce describes herself as someone who isn’t “good with words,” she found a simple, powerful way to express her gratitude:
